The City of White Plains Launches My Brother's Keeper Program

The My Brother’s Keeper initiative was launched by President Obama in February 2014 to respond to the challenges faced by boys and young men of color, specifically the persistent opportunity gaps that hinder them in reaching their full potential. The initiative is the nation’s first-ever effort designed specifically to reach one million at risk youth and provide programs and services to reduce absenteeism and school failure.

The initiative asks cities and towns, businesses, and foundations to participate by helping “connect young people to mentoring, support networks, and the skills they need to find a good job or go to college and work their way into the middle class.” (https://www.whitehouse.gov/my-brothers-keeper)

The My Brother’s Keeper program is an evidence based, data-driven program intended to reach and support the highest risk students and implement a coherent “cradle–to-college/career strategy” for improving life outcomes of all young people, to ensure that they reach their full potential, regardless of who they are, where they come from, or the circumstances into which they are born.

The program has the following core values:

o Ensure all children enter school cognitively, physically, socially and emotionally ready
o Ensure all children read at grade level by 3rd grade
o Ensure all youth graduate from high school
o Ensure all youth complete post-secondary education or training
o Ensure all youth out of school are employed
o Ensure all youth remain safe from violent crime and receive second chances

In accepting this challenge, the City of White Plains joins more than 250 municipalities across the nation, including Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, Yonkers, Rochester and New York City.
